China cherishes vast lands and rich medicinal resources. Owing to the broad areas and various species of medicinal materials, as well as the inconvenience in commercial exchanges of the medicinal materials, the methods of using medicines differ from each other. “Doctors couldn’t identify herbs and only followed the common people, who couldn’t explain in details. So all of them depended on the collectors, who got some of materials from other sources and couldn’t tell the good from the bad. Therefore they decocted the stalactite in vinegar to whiten it and soaked the Herbal Asari (xi xin) to straighten it…mistook the stem of Cnidium monnieri as that of Ligusticum chuanxiong, and weeds as Ginseng!” Different materials of the same name and the same material with different names are common phenomena.
In order to clarify the confused botanical origins and guarantee the accuracy, safety and effectiveness of herbs in clinical applications, it is necessary to enhance the ability of medical workers in differentiate medicinal substances. The experts and professors in our university have been conducting researches on this special topic. Scientific research projects specimens, such as Medulla Tetrapanacis (tong cao), Radix Polygalae (yuan zhi), Herba Violae (zi hua di ding), Herba Taxilli (sang ji sheng), Caulis Clematidis Armandii (chuan mu tong), etc., are on display in this room so as to offer scientific bases for teaching, researches, production, sales, medical treatment and inspection.
